As global supply chains accelerate their transition toward sustainability, the logistics industry faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining efficiency, reliability, and operational excellence. At Gemalink International Port, sustainability is not simply a commitment – it is a strategic pillar embedded within the company’s long-term development vision.

In collaboration with CMA CGM, one of the world’s leading shipping groups, Gemalink is proud to support the development of Vietnam’s first fully electric container barge system. This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in the transformation of inland transportation and demonstrates how innovation and partnership can drive meaningful environmental progress across the supply chain.
The project introduces an electric-powered container barge operating along the inland waterway corridor connecting Binh Duong Province with the Cai Mep deep-water port cluster. Unlike conventional barges powered by fossil fuels, the new barge operates entirely on battery technology, eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions during transportation. The barge will be supported by charging infrastructure at Gemalink Port and powered by renewable energy solutions, including a dedicated solar energy system designed to provide clean electricity for daily operations.
By integrating renewable energy generation with transportation activities, the project establishes a practical model for low-carbon logistics in Vietnam. Once operational, the system is expected to significantly reduce emissions associated with inland container transportation while providing customers with more sustainable supply chain solutions. The initiative also supports Vietnam’s national commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and aligns with the growing expectations of global cargo owners for environmentally responsible logistics services.

The electric barge initiative represents more than a transportation project. It reflects the company’s broader commitment to advancing sustainable port operations and contributing to the decarbonization of the maritime and logistics sector. For Gemalink, supporting this initiative is a natural extension of its long-term vision for greener logistics. By providing the infrastructure and operational environment necessary for pioneering projects such as electric inland transportation, Gemalink is helping create the conditions for a more sustainable supply chain, demonstrating how ports can play an active role in enabling low-carbon logistics solutions while maintaining the high standards of efficiency and reliability required by global trade.
With the support of CMA Terminals — one of the world’s leading port operators and a subsidiary of the CMA CGM Group — Gemalink is progressively adopting international best practices in sustainability, environmental stewardship, occupational health and safety, and green port operations. This strategic partnership enables our terminal to continuously enhance operational excellence while advancing its sustainability agenda. Gemalink has continuously invested in modern infrastructure, energy-efficient equipment, digital transformation, and operational innovations to enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact. Since commencing operations in 2021, Gemalink has rapidly emerged as one of Vietnam’s most important deep-sea gateways, capable of accommodating some of the world’s largest container vessels of up to 250,000 DWT. Through an extensive network of shipping services connecting Vietnam with Europe, the Americas, Africa, and other major markets, the terminal plays a vital role in strengthening Vietnam’s position within global supply chains, reinforcing Gemalink’s ambition to become one of the region’s leading sustainable container terminals.

Looking ahead, Gemalink remains committed to working closely with customers, shipping lines, and strategic partners to develop innovative solutions that support both business growth and environmental responsibility, including the electric barge project serves as a powerful example of how technology, collaboration, and long-term vision can accelerate the transition toward greener logistics.
Driven by innovation, connectivity, and sustainable development, Gemalink aspires not only to be Vietnam’s leading deep-sea port, but also a trusted logistics partner creating long-term value for customers, communities, and future generations.
